Dr. Connor Rhodes said goodbye to Chicago Med during the premiere of season 5 of Wednesday – but not before another shock, courtesy of his ex-girlfriend Ava (Norma Kuhling). Realizing that it was only a matter of time before the truth was disclosed about the murder of Connor's father, Ava was down. After repeating to Connor that she had done it for them, she took a scalpel and slit her throat! Despite a valiant effort, Connor was not able to save his life and decided he needed a fresh start in a place where he would not always be linked to this tragedy.
With these words, Connor and his representative Colin Donnell said goodbye to the hospital – but the door remains open to allow the doc to make a new visit, reveal below presenters Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov. The two men also explain why Ava had to die and discuss the possibility of "happiness forever" for Connor and Robin.
TVLine | What kind of conversations did you have with Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling about their fate and how things were going to be?
ANDREW SCHNEIDER | Well, we told them both that we wanted to give their story a dramatic and moving end.
DIANE FROLOV | And they were both very satisfied. Norma has a lot of fun with this last episode.
SCHNEIDER | [She was] go for that. They're both great actors, and you know, the door is still open for Connor's character. He is alive.
FROLOV | And everyone likes to work with him.
SCHNEIDER | But they were both really ready to step in and solve their stories that way.
TVLine | Ava's story ends very unexpectedly. Why did you decide to give it such a tragic end?
FROLOV | We really wanted to close his story, absolutely slam the door. And that allowed him to take one last revenge on [Connor], and also gave him a great reason to leave. So these two things came together in this decision.
TVLine | When we met Ava for the first time, she seemed pretty stable and healthy. What do you think was the turning point for her?
SCHNEIDER | As she became more and more obsessed with Connor, all her emotional problems, which were buried but were there, were mentioned.
FROLOV | And that has therefore provoked them, and she has a personality disorder where everything is really revolving around her, her desires and her desire to get things that she wants.
SCHNEIDER | That does not mean that she is not an excellent surgeon. But what really was triggered by [was]we have heard of some excellent surgeons struggling with terrible psychological problems.
TVLine | Have you ever considered other scenarios for Connor and Ava to conclude?
FROLOV | As soon as we started going to the street where she slept with her father, we knew that there would be no happy ending to that.
SCHNEIDER | There was a kind of fatality, that it would end badly.
TVLine | And have you considered any other special scenarios for this episode, how would they say goodbye?
FROLOV | We debated whether she would survive suicide and be arrested, but that did not seem so satisfying.
SCHNEIDER | Or have an impact on Connor. We really wanted people to understand why he was leaving, and we thought that by killing him, despite all his efforts in the operating room, it would really help that motivation.
FROLOV | But having one's life was a possibility.
TVLine | Where did Connor go? Are we going to have an update on exactly where he landed?
FROLOV | Well, you know, we feel that he has accepted this offer at the Mayo Clinic.
SCHNEIDER | It's not far.
TVLine | Some fans still hoped that he and Robin would be together. Was there a chance that the two of them would meet and leave on their own?
SCHNEIDER | They are still young. They have all their future ahead of them.
FROLOV | [[[[Laughs]We have never closed the door on this, but as far as our series is concerned, as a scenario, that obviously will not happen.
SCHNEIDER | But we report Robin this season.
TVLine | Connor had two really adorable farewells with Dr. Latham and Goodwin. How did you choose which characters would be the ones who would return it in some way?
SCHNEIDER | They were the characters with whom he had the deepest connections. Latham was his teacher and mentor.
FROLOV | And he was a great friend of Latham.
SCHNEIDER | There was a very deep friendship there, even though Latham was not the best to express his emotions. They really liked each other a little.
FROLOV | And Goodwin is the one who defended him, who brought him. Once again, we felt that he would say goodbye to him, [and] she would say goodbye.
SCHNEIDER | In a sense, they were both his bosses and he was kind of farewell to them, for professional and personal reasons.
TVLine | Has there ever been a scene between Connor and Will that sent it off?
SCHNEIDER | Will, at that time, was so absorbed by her feelings about Natalie that it was difficult to build it. But they had that very sincere scene on the roof before Connor made that decision.
FROLOV | And there's that moment when Will says, "I just want to get out of here," and [Connor] says, "I know how you feel," and the subtext was that he felt the same thing.
TVLine | Has what happened with Ava cause complications for the hospital?
SCHNEIDER | We will not deal with that. The next episode advances six weeks later. So, there was a big reset at this point.
