After three days of choice, the 2019 NFL draft is in the books, which means it's time to distribute materials for winners and losers. In two or three years – and maybe two or three months – it will probably look stupid. It is also difficult to find a group of losers in this draft, because of the deep nature of the class available to the teams.
People with a lot of second and third round picks have managed to excel because of the depth. And several teams have really increased their chances of winning or qualifying for the playoffs in 2019. Other people have also been helped.
Let's look at some who really stood out.
WINNERS
Arizona Cardinals
Steve Keim has been a prominent man at the front office in recent weeks / months, thanks to the focus on Kyler Murray versus Josh Rosen. In the history of the modern NFL, no one has yet selected quarterbacks in the top 10 selections back-to-back and this has led people to question the chief executive of the Cardinals. There should be no more questions after the Cardinals get into an incredible NFL 2019 draft class, though. It is difficult to assess what they did in isolation. Jumping Rosen, one of the top 10 picks a year ago, for No. 62 in this project is a brutal L to take. Do not be able to catch Nick Bosa or Quinnen Williams with this first choice. The project will ultimately depend on Kyler and his game, even in his first season. If Murray struggles and Rosen goes to Miami and wins a few games, it will be a bad look.
But get away from Murray's idea against Rosen, look at this rough draft and try not to be impressed. Keim and the Cardinals killed him. Kyler was the best QB prospect in this class. Kliff Kingsbury likes it. You must be optimistic about the nature of this offense, especially compared to 2019. Byron Murphy was arguably the best cornerback in this category and the Cardinals placed him ahead of the second round. They used Rosen's choice to win the UMass receiver, Andy Isabella, which should make life easier for Murray and work well in the air raid, especially with Christian Kirk in the field. The Cardinals were good value for money with Zach Allen at the start of the third round, then continued to get Murray's weapons in the fourth with the surprising fall of Hakeem Butler. Life after Larry Fitzgerald's announcement and a group of receivers composed of Butler, Kirk and Isabella is extremely intriguing. Add KeeSean Johnson to Fresno and the Cardinals have a bright future. Deionte Thompson is doing well with Buddha Baker and D.J. Swearinger for this defensive backfield.
The NFC West will be very difficult in 2019, even more if the 49ers make a jump. Expecting the Cardinals to magically metamorphose into contenders for the card after being clearly the worst football team of the past year is clearly overkill. But if Kyler can succeed as a rookie, it's a team that can dramatically improve his total wins.
Patriots of New England
It's not as if the Patriots' coach / general manager needed another award on his wall, but if you were to hand out a trophy for the best result in that category, the Patriots might well receive the material. If you build a New England-based curve from the last pick of the first round, it's even easier to argue an argument, although having about 450 choices over the second and third rounds certainly helps. In the first round, the Pats were at number 32, which was a surprise given Belichick's penchant for selling, and allowed Neal Harry to leave the state of Arizona. He perfectly complements Julian Edelman, Philip Dorsett and the weapons currently available to New England on his Depth Map. Vandy's Joejuan Williams was the captain of Pete Prisco's Better Than team and Chase Winovich of Michigan might be better than Rashan Gary, past two innings earlier by the Packers. Damien Harris is a machine of descent destruction that can pass Nick Saban to Bill Belichick, ensuring that the Patriots will not hover the rock if Sony Michel is injured. Hjalte Froholdt was my favorite draft to lead Westeros at the end of this Game of Thrones season, so hard not to like it here. Jarrett Stidham is the latest in a long line of quarters "ready to replace Tom Brady", which the Patriots will likely choose for a second-round pick in three years. It's even hard to really criticize Belichick for taking a kicker, although it's amazing that they've tackled a guy (Jake Bailey of Stanford) who uses his right foot.
Lincoln Riley
In recent years, we've seen some university programs gain a lot of notoriety because of the many players in the NFL draft. Alabama and Clemson stand out, obviously. Add Oklahoma to the list graciously offered by a ridiculous NFL 2019 draft group. Kyler Murray is the second consecutive Heisman Trophy winner, Riley, and is now the second consecutive overall ranking in Oklahoma. Marquise Brown was also a first-round pick, becoming the Ravens' first wide receiver, a guy who should be able to make a big impact in her first year with Baltimore. And then we had a ridiculous race of the Sooners, with a silly race of offensive linemen coming between the second and fourth rounds. The Bills were traded to Cody Ford in 38th place, the Rams caught Bobby Evans in the 97th day of the second day of the repechage, then the Seahawks took Dru Samia in the fourth round and the Ravens defeated Ben Powers with the 123rd choice. The NFL 2019 draft is essentially a billboard for Riley and his program: if you want to have a chance to dominate in attack and be selected by an NFL team, come to Norman and play football .
Josh Rosen
It was a tough race for the former first round pick, but at the end of the day he landed in a place where they are rebuilding and would like him to become their quarterback duty-free . The pressure in Miami is minimal despite all the scrutiny of recent weeks. He was messed up by Arizona, but he handled everything with incredible class. It's hard not to encourage Rosen for the moment.
Lamar Jackson
The Ravens quarterback took part in the repechage with the worst group of receiver receivers in the NFL and left with Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin as men with whom he can start and grow with. I'm expecting some clashes on the road for this offense, and I do not know if it will be the most explosive option, but Jackson can be a smuggler. He just needed weapons. Congratulations to Eric DeCosta for managing his first throw and making sure he has some very powerful options around his quarterback.
losers
Dave Gettleman
A few different problems here for Gettleman, although I generally appreciate his project (especially the predictable nature with which he took Dexter Lawrence, I say it in a good way). First, the transport for Odell Beckham is hard to justify. The giants got Lawrence, Oshane Ximines and Jabrill Peppers for Odell. In no world do you trade directly. You do not do it. Two, the Giants have recruited Daniel Jones and we do not know when he will play. Gettleman said Jones could sit behind Eli Manning for THREE YEARS, which is probably just him who says things maybe? Giants fans should hope so. If you pass the number 6 choice in the general classification and they do not play in the next three years, because Eli is still able to emigrate in the same way he has done for about a year. a real problem. I think the Giants' property leaves Gettleman a long leash here, but it was confusing to hear that he fell in love with Jones after three rounds at the Senior Bowl. This stinks of a property surge to get a quarter and a fear of missing it later. Maybe other teams had good grades on Jones. But if the choice does not materialize, this draft is a total disaster and everything will be put on the head of Gettleman. It's a pretty huge risk.
Houston Texans
It's hard for me to go beyond their first-round pick and the distance that separates them from Andre Dilliard, but the Philadelphia Eagles are trapped to take the stick against Washington State in front of Houston. Deshaun Watson is clearly a transcendent franchise quarterback, but he must be able to stay on the field if the Texans want to win. And the offensive line was one of the worst of football last year. Can Tytus Howard come from the state of Alabama and become an instant impact starter? The same question could be asked of Max Scharping, second-round coach, in northern Illinois. It's not that it's a bad choice, it's just that the round was well prepared to allow the Texans to tackle a leading offensive lineman and get potential targets out of their reach. target. I appreciate the choice to have Lonnie Johnson appear in the second round and Kahale Warring of San Diego State is a nice tight end as a third round pick. Charles Omenihu from Texas was very helpful in the fifth round. I do not hate the choices. I am just worried about Texans' ability to protect Watson in the future and the negative impact this could have on their 2019 season.
Detroit Lions
We loved this call from Bryant McFadden on our show at our headquarters – Detroit ended the first round in the first round for the third time in the decade, with TJ Hockenson joining Brandon Pettigrew and Eric Ebron on a list that would not described as illustrative. Jahlani Tavai from Hawaii helps as a linebacker (I thought that they could have become Devin Bush in the first round) and I do not necessarily hate their choices. But I am confused as to the identity of their identity. Will the Lions hammer the rock by paying Matthew Stafford huge sums? Will they line up three tight ends and try to feed Kerryon Johnson? Even if everything goes well, they have to do it in a division where the Packers have obviously done better (Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage in the first round only) and where the Vikings have added a center (Garrett Bradbury) that could ignite their game. runtime and Dalvin. The potential of a single cut of Cook. The north of the NFC is tough and the Lions simply do not feel like they have the sauce they need.
Cam Newton
The quarterback of the Panthers franchise is heading to a time when some decisions will be made. He only has two years left, he will want a big Russell Wilson type contract, he just underwent two shoulder surgeries in three years and the Panthers a) did not add any more. weapons for him and b) added Will Grier with the 100th overall pick. I think it's a good move for the Panthers and I like what Marty Hurney did in his draft. But if Newton is slow to recover or struggles, Grier will be called to the field. It is a local product that is raging and whose fans will fall in love. The addition of Greg Little was great and helped Cam (or Grier?), But there could be an interesting point in the near future for Cam where things go wrong with Carolina. Perhaps he is recovering quickly and all of this sounds stupid in a few months, but it seems like it could be a point of inflection.
