The deal also included the Sun Records brand, which some sources said is also a very profitable component, as well as the Sun Diner in Nashville and its merch business. John singleton – brother of fire Shelby singleton who bought the Sun label in 1969 from the founder and industry legend Sam phillips – will continue to oversee the Sun Records operation.
“We are extremely happy to hand over the baton from Sun Records to Primary Wave and have confidence that they will continue to reach new heights for the crown jewel of the music business created by Sam Phillips, which my brother Shelby and I have kept alive and relevant for the past 50 years, ”said John Singleton, president of Sun Entertainment Corp., in a statement.
Primary Wave will also provide additional resources to develop the Sun Records brand, which can now capitalize on the company’s marketing, branding, digital strategy and licensing and timing opportunities.
“Sun Records is the original home of some of music’s greatest legends,” said Larry Mestel, CEO and founder of Primary Wave, in a statement. “Sam Phillips treated all of his artists with the utmost respect and provided a space for creativity like no other. His vision for Sun fits perfectly with the creative ethos of Primary Wave, and I’m delighted that this historic label is now part of our family.
Sun Records is currently distributed by the label itself under direct digital licensing deals and by licensing the masters to well known reissue labels like Charly Records and Bear Family Records.
