With 1:05 to go and a fourth and one to come, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had a question for quarterback Lamar Jackson.
The Sunday night football the show showed Harbaugh on the sidelines shouting, “Lamar! Do you want to go there? “
Jackson apparently answered yes. Thus, the Ravens have inserted Trystan Colon as an additional offensive lineman. Jackson lined up a shotgun snap and ran down the middle for 2 yards, passing sticks to defeat the Chiefs.
It was Jackson’s last big run in a heavily featured game, as the Ravens claimed a 36-35 win in Week Two.
Jackson finished with 107 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns in 16 carries. He also had 239 yards and a touchdown with two picks.
But the Ravens only got a chance to convert that fourth-and-one because rookie outside linebacker Odafe Oweh created key turnover.
After the Ravens scored to increase by one to just over three minutes in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs’ push that followed had entered Baltimore territory. And the Ravens had only one timeout left, so Kansas City was able to run the time before attempting a winning basket.
But on the second and third of the Baltimore 32, Oweh released the ball from running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Oweh dived to the ground, recovering his own forced fumble to give the ball to his team with a chance to freeze the game.
Although the Chiefs had their three time outs left, the Baltimore offense did its job and got the necessary first goal.
The Ravens ran out of football all night, recording 251 rushing yards, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. Ty’Son Williams had 77 yards, Latavius Murray had 36 on a touchdown, Devonta Freeman had 29 and even fullback Patrick Ricard had 2 yards on a transfer.
But the Ravens’ receiving corps also had a solid night, with Marquise Brown catching six passes for 113 yards with a 42-yard touchdown. Tight end Mark Andrews had five catches for 57 yards and Sammy Watkins caught four passes for 44 yards.
For the Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes played well but made a critical error for an interception in the third quarter. With Oweh set to drop him for a sack at third and 12-year-old Mahomes unleashed a misguided pass to tight end Travis Kelce on the left side. But cornerback Tavon Young caught the ball instead for Mahomes’ first career interception in September.
Mahomes completed 24 of 31 passes for 343 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Kelce caught seven passes for 109 yards with one of those touchdowns, becoming the fastest tight end with 8,000 career yards.
Safety Tyrann Mathieu also played his first game of the season, recording a pair of interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown.
But tonight was about the Ravens, and Jackson was recording his first career win over Kansas City. The Chiefs had beaten the Ravens in three straight regular-season games since Mahomes and Jackson took on their respective teams in 2018.
The Ravens will travel to Detroit next week to face the Lions. The Chiefs will be back home to face division rivals Chargers.
