Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams has agreed to become the next coach of the Phoenix Suns, the Suns announced Friday.
The agreement is concluded for five years, said Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Williams is the seventh Suns coach in eight seasons. The team fired Igor Kokoskov last month after one season.
Williams has resumed training this season as a senior assistant to Brett Brown. He spent the last two years at the San Antonio Spurs offices following the death of his wife, Ingrid, in early 2016.
Williams left the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant head coach after the death of his wife. He and his children moved to San Antonio, where Williams had expanded his family.
Before joining the Thunder, Williams led New Orleans for five seasons. He reached the playoffs in his first season (2010-11) and his last (2014-15).
This season, the Suns tied for the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second-worst performance of the NBA at 19-63. The New York Knicks were between 17 and 65 years old. Phoenix was a worse NBA 21-61 a year ago.
Since 2012-13, the Suns are 199-375, tied with the Orlando Magic for the worst NBA record in this period.
