The Phoenix Suns have been in talks with the Oklahoma City Thunder over acquiring All-Star point guard Chris Paul, according to Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps of ESPN.

Windhorst writes that “talks are ongoing and continue to gain ground, but no deal is imminent”.

Paul, 35, has just completed an All-NBA season in which he led the Thunder to the playoffs. He averaged 17.6 points and 6.7 assists per game, making the All-Star squad for the first time since 2017.

The 10-time All-Star was traded from the Houston Rockets to the Thunder in the summer of 2019 as part of the Russell Westbrook deal. He has two years left on his contract, earning $ 41.3 million next season and has a player option of $ 44.2 million for the following year.

In order for any type of Paul’s trade to work, the Suns would have to include significant salaries in return to match Paul’s important contract. With Devin Booker supposedly untouchable, contenders include point guard Ricky Rubio ($ 17 million) and Kelly Oubre Jr. ($ 14.3 million).

Paul played for Suns head coach Monty Williams in New Orleans and was drafted by Suns vice president of basketball operations Jeff Bower in 2005.
