This Super Mario World soundtrack remaster lets us hear how iconic music sounds when uncompressed for Super Nintendo’s limiting hardware. The result is richer, more dynamic versions of some of the most recognizable melodies in video game history.
The Super Mario Restored Project is the band responsible for bringing these classic songs to new life, and the way they do it is really interesting. Instead of just taking the tracks as they sound on SNES and improving them, they actually dig up the original samples and restore them fully uncompressed. In essence, it’s probably similar to how Super Mario World composer Koji Kondo originally intended the music to sound.
The full restored soundtrack is not yet available, but there is a solid selection of tracks you can listen to right now. Here is the famous title screen jingle:
And here is the “Athletic” theme, which you will remember from some of the most chaotic levels in Super Mario World. You can compare it to the original version of the melody to see how the process of compressing the tracks degrades the quality.
Hearing these tracks restored to their uncompressed glory is a wonderful pleasure, and the restored Super Mario Project does a great job. But to be honest, that puts me off. There is something slightly disorienting about hearing this music which is so closely linked to my psyche with all this clarity found. The cheerful and tinny sound of the original music feels so right to me. Still, the remaster is pretty cool for novelty alone.
