(CNN) – Get ready to don your Mario Kart racing gear and throw Koopa shells.

The world’s first Super Nintendo World is set to open at the Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka on February 4, 2021.

Executive producer Thomas Geraghty of Universal Creative – the innovation and creation arm of Universal Studios – announced the opening date at a press conference Monday at the park’s new Bowser Castle.

He says the new addition to Universal Studios will deliver an experience that “is not found anywhere else in the world” and includes attractions based on the popular Mario game series, first launched in the 1980s, as well as restaurants and gift shops. .

In addition to the conventional rides, the entire Super Nintendo World will be an immersive game in which guests can compete with other players in the park.

“It will provide the very first ‘Asobi’ (game) experience for our guests,” says Geraghty, adding that visitors will be able to jump and drill through “question blocks” and collect virtual coins.

Customers can purchase Power Bands, a bracelet that can be linked to a smartphone app, where they can store these virtual coins and keys.

But Bowser’s Castle, with its stone walls, iron fences, and a large statue of Mario’s antagonist, is what will really turn fans on.

This is where guests will find the world’s officially recognized first round of Mario Kart, called “Koopa’s Challenge”.

While wearing a helmet, gamers will be able to immerse themselves in the popular racing game using some advanced technologies such as augmented reality, projection mapping and special effects.

“Guests will run through the Mushroom Kingdom, fight their way down the track, launch shells at Koopa Lane, run alongside Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach,” says Geraghty.

Other top attractions revealed on Monday include Princess Peach’s Castle and Yoshi’s Adventure.

The park is the result of more than six years of work between Universal Creative and the Nintendo Creative team, led by Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario and representative director of Nintendo.

It was originally scheduled to open in 2020 but has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

CNN’s Junko Ogura also contributed to the report.
