Super Nintendo World – which is part of Universal Studios Japan’s largest theme park – will open on February 4, Universal Studios announced on Monday. The theme park would open with two main rides: a Mario Kart ride and a Yoshi’s Adventure ride. In Monday’s announcement, the companies showed the Mario Kart part of the world.

Mario Kart’s ride will be called Koopa’s Challenge, which starts inside Bowser’s Castle. Universal Studios has posted some of its own photos of the ride, but you can watch a video tour of the attraction via Bloomberg.

Bloomberg reporter Kurumi Mori said the ride uses “AR headsets”, but is not coasting; it’s on rails. Each kart has four seats with their own steering wheels. Mori said that “the kart is definitely on rails,” but that “the racers have some control” in collecting items and throwing shells – like in the video game. She noted that Bowser’s Castle is where the ride begins, but there are multiple levels to navigate, including lava and submarine-themed worlds, as well as the famous Rainbow Road.

These are the first big details we’ve received on major attractions, but in October Universal Studios introduced a restaurant and shopping area in the Osaka-based theme park.

Players will wear magnetic bracelets in the park which will allow people to engage in the different “levels” of the park, which adds to the scores. How it works, exactly, is still unclear. Super Nintendo World was originally scheduled to open in the summer, but has been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Universal Studios Osaka reopened to locals on June 8, at a limited capacity.

Mori noted that Universal Studios Osaka will take special measures due to the pandemic, with mandatory social distancing and additional disinfection for racing helmets.
