With only a day left to sign up for EVO 2019, participants managed to break a new record for participants in what already advertised as the biggest fighting game event in the world. year.
Joey "Mr. AssistantCuellar announced via Twitter today that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has reached the milestone of 3,000 participants, making it also the single most popular title in the history of EVO.
The announcement comes just two days after Dragon Ball FighterZ passed the 1,000 mark, which also set an EVO record with seven different four-digit titles for participants. 2018 had six cross matches.
Smash's previous record seems to have been in 2016, when Super Smash Bros. on Wii U managed to reach 2,656 participants with Melee following him, to 2,373 players.
Dragon Ball FighterZ was the flagship game at EVO 2018 with 2,530 entrants entered from all over the fighting game community, even though it seems like the hype of Smash Ultimate was even bigger – it will probably take several years before seeing Something beat the first year of Street Fighter 5's monster in more than 5,000 world warriors.
Registration will close tomorrow, July 14, so the numbers will probably have a last bump the next day before closing. Although Dragon Ball FighterZ did not get the last job at EVO 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate pleads his case for the final day of Sunday's final.
