Super Smash Bros. Ultimate more than lives his name. The crossover fighter brings together in each character of the series story, characters that cover the entire video game industry of Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Square Enix, Konami and even Microsoft. And with the paid DLC characters, the game has been enriched with new free modes.
But why is the game so big? We do not complain, we are just curious. I always thought that the team was right to recognize that the popularity of the Nintendo Switch could allow a much greater success. The sales figures bear witness to this. However, the real answer can be a lot more comforting, so sweet-bitter.
Sakurai at the Game Awards:
I'm sorry to have mentioned this personal story at such a time … but creating Smash Bros on the Switch was the last mission that Satoru Iwata entrusted to me … I will continue to work hard. https://t.co/cH3SxcN05Y– PushDustIn (@PushDustIn) September 13, 2019
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won several awards this week at the Tokyo Game Show. And during his thank you speech, the mastermind of the franchise, Masahiro Sakurai, said that the game was the last task given to him by Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, who died in 2015.
Before their meteoric rise through Nintendo, Sakurai and Iwata were working together at the HAL lab. And even after Sakurai became a free agent, Iwata could count on him to Smash Bros. games for new Nintendo systems. Iwata even announced Super Smash Bros. Brawl on stage at the E3 2005 before officially asking Sakurai to take the reins. Iwata's story as a game developer has helped him to collaborate with other studios, even as president. Read this book from his interviews with Iwata Asks to learn more about his process.
Because of this personal connection, Sakurai engages in this ultimate fighting game, works tirelessly and is now committed to delivering even more DLC fighters beyond the five promised. Do not expect non-video game characters like Goku or Iron Man. It's a touching story of professional friendship. We hope Sakurai will rest soon!
