This week Super girl leaned into uncomfortable conversations as Kelly Olsen tried to get the rest of the Superfriends to focus their attention on an underserved community in dire need of help – but found herself screaming into the void.
Tuesday’s episode, titled “Blind Spots”, centered on the collapse of the Ormfell Building which left nearby residents, including young Joey (Aiden Stoxx), seriously ill. The titular hero of the Arrowverse show was well-meaning in his quest to find Nxyly – the fifth dimensional pixie was a major threat to National City – but his focused efforts ignored the immediate crisis directly caused by this conflict: a hospital lacking resources to treat people who were getting sicker by the hour.
Kelly grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of help from the Superfriends, with the exception of his girlfriend Alex, who called a friend to send her extra supplies, and Dreamer, who loaned her a device for her. ‘help in his investigation.. Diggle (guest star and director David Ramsey), who was referred by her brother James, also provided much needed support as she investigated the cause of the community’s illness. “That day was really tough,” Azie Tesfai told TVLine of Kelly’s frank conversation with Supergirl. “It’s an interesting thing when you have a character who represents the best of so many people, and so taking that and challenging it was uncomfortable for some people.”
Melissa Benoist, meanwhile, “really wanted to address the discomfort of the situation,” she says. “There was a lot of crying. It was uncomfortable. “
Tesfai co-wrote the episode alongside J. Holtham (Ground, Cape & Dagger, Jessica jones) and recalls the raw emotion felt by everyone during this scene, including the cameraman who told him he wanted to cry. “I’m like, ‘This is how we should feel because these conversations feel this way,” she explains. “A lot of times it comes to the detriment of the person sharing it because we compromise ourselves to make you feel better. Getting Kelly to say things that I said in my life or always wanted to say that I didn’t feel authorized to do was a sticky situation. I felt like comforting at times and I was like “No”. This character also teaches me to stay within my limits and to speak shamelessly about how I feel.
The show highlights these limitations in Kelly’s conversation with Alex at the end of the hour. When Alex asks how she can best support his girlfriend, Kelly, who is still dealing with the events of the episode, asks for the time and space to unbox it all and just be loved and supported. It’s a difficult but necessary moment that ties in with the thesis of the episode, which is that these issues take work and cannot be resolved overnight.
Tesfai notes that she and her co-star Chyler Leigh have had similar offscreen conversations, talking about their strong bond as real-life friends.
“Chyler and I are very close in real life, so even our dynamic and aggressive purebreds have that. [discomfort] because she loves me so much and supports me so much, ”she shares. “But it’s like, I can tell you something, but you’ll never really get it.” For example, how can you support me so that I feel better, and not just that you feel better? It’s such a complicated thing to tackle, and I was grateful that this scene hasn’t changed much at all since the first draft. Everything changed a lot as we went through the notes, but no one touched that scene. “
Tesfai also shares a real friendship with Ramsey and relied on that strong bond when creating the episode. “It was really like we went through the war together… we were a team, and it was amazing to have that support on and off set,” she says. “It felt like a student movie because it was very intimate and there weren’t a lot of cooks in the kitchen. They gave us so much of a say in how we did it that it felt really small, even though it was this big show.
The episode saw Kelly become a Guardian to help an underserved community, and those efforts will continue throughout the season. “The good thing about it is it’s an ongoing conversation that really goes through the final. Once Kelly finds her power, she stays there, ”says Tesfai. “We’re actually more interested in her as a social worker, and that story becomes a big part of her after the next episode. “
Fans can also look forward to plenty of fun scenes between Kelly and Alex, enjoying their status as crime-fighting girlfriends. “[She] and Alex has steamy scenes where they kiss and then slap each other on the butt, ”Tesfai teases. “This is the best of a love crime fighter duo… We have fight scenes where we talk about ‘What did you cook for dinner?’ which is a lot of fun.
