Microsoft insists the Surface Duo is a real Surface, even if it hesitates to call it a phone. But there’s one thing Microsoft has deemed appropriate to be a part of every Surface – including the delayed Surface Neo – that the Surface Duo doesn’t have but would suit it just fine: a keyboard. Much like the Type Cover helped define the Surface tablet, a keyboard case tucked away on the outside of Microsoft’s dual-screen Android device could be a defining element of its design. For years Microsoft has offered a slim, foldable Bluetooth keyboard that works with Android and other operating systems; that’s close to what such a case might look like.
Offering such a keyboard accessory would align well with the productivity proposition of the Surface Duo in general and the Surface brand in particular. When Microsoft introduced the now-delayed Surface Neo, both screens may have made headlines, but the keyboard was a key part of the story as well.
There would clearly be some challenges. A keyboard case would consume more pocket space. One of the defining features of the Duo is its 360-degree hinge which leaves no room for a wraparound, even very thin case that can accommodate its full rotation, let alone one that can accommodate an acceptable key shift. Many years before the keyless-travel Touch Cover debuted with the first Surface, Logitech tried to create a soft and highly unsatisfying keyboard case made from the fabric wrapped around the Palm V. with shaped designs. sleeve in which the Duo can slip, whether its screens are positioned inward or outward.
But while the flip-phone-like protection that the closed Surface Duo provides to its displays has barely been mentioned among its design benefits, it would allow for a sleeve-like space that the Duo could slide into, perhaps even with screens facing outward if the key surfaces have been softened in some way. An even thinner keyboard might be possible if Microsoft enabled a pogo connector on one side of the Duo, perhaps when in tent mode, as that would remove the need for a battery. However, the already expensive Duo does not.
A removable keyboard would also bolster Microsoft’s cover against fears that the Duo might be seen as a dual-screen version of what we all already carry in our pockets. Indeed, Samsung’s decision to put a full-size screen on the front of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 confirms that this product’s signature foldable screen is unused most of the time. This dynamic also helped shape LG’s decision to make the second display of its newer phones like the Velvet an accessory. The single screen scenario will often apply to the Duo as well.
Of course, nothing would stop Microsoft from releasing such a keyboard case in the months to come. The company could wait a few months of sales under the Duo’s belt to release such an accessory. Alternatively, since it would be bluetooth based, a Zagg or Logitech could try one of the Duo market developments. On the other hand, the tail should appear in time to wag the dog. Imagine if Microsoft had waited for the third-generation Surface Pro (when the device started to catch on) to release the keyboard cover. We would think of the Surface very differently today – that is, if we think about it.
