The Detroit Lions made a surprising move on Tuesday by releasing attacking midfielder C.J. Anderson and hitting running back Paul Perkins to take his place in the lineup. Perkins was sidelined Tuesday by the New York Giants and claimed by the Lions, which led to the release of Anderson.
Detroit hired Anderson into the team a few yards in the place of LeGarrette Blount, which the Lions left free. Anderson struggled in two regular season games with the Lions, totaling 16 runs for 43 yards and averaging 2.7 yards per run. Anderson's Sunday performance did not allow his case to stay on the Lions, since he finished with five runs for eight yards, with a long run of seven.
Releasing Anderson offers more opportunities to rookie Ty Johnson, who has amassed five carries for 30 yards in the win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Johnson made 13 shots in the win, while Anderson got 12. Anderson was Johnson's third back goal.
Perkins, a Giants pick in the fifth round of 2016, had 112 runs for 456 yards (4.1 yards per race) in his rookie season, adding 15 catches for 162 yards. Perkins struggled the following season in New York, totaling 41 runs for 90 yards and eight catches for 46 yards. He missed the entire 2018 season due to a pectoral injury and was inactive for the first two games of the Giants.
