WASHINGTON – According to a private survey, US firms have created the least jobs in nine years, while manufacturers, construction companies and mining companies lay off workers.
The payroll processor, ADP, said Wednesday that companies had created only 27,000 jobs in May, the lowest number since March 2010. Construction jobs fell by 36,000 and manufacturing 3,000.
Growth is expected to slow this year with the slowdown in the global economy, the impact of the Trump administration 's tax cuts and the entry into force of its tariffs. According to analysts, the economy could grow at an annual rate of only 1.5% during the April-June quarter.
ADP figures do not include government recruitments and often diverge from the government's official report, which is expected to be released on Friday. Economists expect the report to indicate employment gains of 185,000, while the unemployment rate remains 3.6%.
