Santa Rosa police arrested a student suspected of carrying a firearm on the campus of Santa Rosa High School on Friday afternoon, resulting in the closure of the campus and two other schools nearby. said Lieutenant Ryan Corcoran of Santa Rosa.
The report of an armed student arrived at the police at around 10:40 am and was presented to a school resource officer on duty who then initiated the lockout of the school, authorities said. Armed officers responded by conducting a room-by-room search on the campus, although the suspect, unidentified by the authorities, was found a few hours later in a nearby neighborhood.
Authorities announced around 13h21. The isolation was lifted following the arrest of the suspect, but parents were asked to stay at the nearby Emeritus Hall parking lot, located on the Santa Rosa Junior College campus.
No shots were fired at the school and no injuries were reported to the police, Corcoran said. The student stated that the gun had been described as a 15-year-old student of the school.
Police had released rifles and a police helicopter flew over the campus while parents arrived and waited in the front for more information shortly after the start of the confinement.
Friday is the last day of school and the students were in the final. Classes were due to finish at noon, so many parents were already ready to arrive on campus at that time.
Students were locked in classrooms with blinds on the door so that no one could see in the classrooms, according to students' texts on campus.
Dani Burlison said that her daughter, a school elder, was attending the graduation ceremony when Burlison received a Nixle alert from the police about locking. She texted her daughter, Ava Burlison, who said she and about 300 other school seniors were taking refuge in the school gym. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Friday night at Santa Rosa High and Sonoma County.
"They are excited about graduating but they also say," What's going on? "It's very stressful."
The nearby Ridgway High School, Santa Rosa City School District Headquarters and Santa Rosa Junior College are also on hold.
Sarah Torre, a 19-year-old Ridgway student, said she was halfway to a graduation ceremony on campus when a loudspeaker announcement announced a containment at the university.
