SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) – After nearly 45 years, the Swansea Mall will officially close for Sunday night.

It once housed nearly 90 stores and businesses. With its closure remains a series of questions about what will happen to the 84-acre site.

The Carlyle Development Group owns the shopping center and, according to the company's general manager, Abdi Mahamedi, did everything possible to keep it open, but the situation was too difficult.

"It needs to be redeveloped as a mixed-use project such as apartments, senior housing, offices and maybe a small retail component." Our group simply does not have the ability to "Run it," said Mahamedisaid during a telephone interview on Friday.

An online auction for the property will take place from April 15th to 17th. According to the auction website, the mall's starting offer amounts to $ 1.4 million.

The remaining stores will have a few weeks to leave the mall after it closes.
