Minors will not marry anymore

The Government proposes to abolish the dispute settlement procedure for minors to enter into marriage.

A change would mean that young people under 18 can no longer marry in Finland. The amendment should enter into force as soon as possible.

"It is in the interest of the child that he can only be married if he wishes," said the Minister of Justice. Antti Häkkänen in a press release on Thursday.

"By abandoning the derogation procedure, we are also providing a clear signal internationally that we do not accept the marriage of minors.

Even Sweden, Norway and Denmark have abolished the possibility of underage marriage.

The number of requests for exemption varied between ten and thirty. Last year, eleven requests were received and seven received a waiver.

The majority of minors who have benefited from the waiver in recent years are seventeen year old girls. The need for dispensation has usually been motivated by religious belief. The exemption is rarely granted to persons under 17 years of age. Then the cause has always been pregnancy.
