The crisis of the Sri Lankan government has been further tightened since President Maithripala Sirisena announced new elections.
When the president found that his prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, did not hold a majority in parliament, Maithripala Sirisena dissolved the legislature. He proclaimed that elections will be held in January.
The action is condemned by the president's opponent as illegal. Nor is it well received by the outside world. Both the United Nations and the United States and the EU have led Maithripala Sirisena to allow Parliament to vote to determine who will form the government.
For several weeks, the island, which has 20 million inhabitants, has had somehow two prime ministers. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe's representative – who refused to leave their posts – are fighting for power.
