The leader of the Bahraini Shiite opposition party was sentenced to life imprisonment, accused of spying against Qatar, his rival, in the Gulf state. Sheikh Ali Salman, leader of the now-banned Al-Wefaq party, was released in June, but the verdict was appealed. Even the last judgment can be appealed.
Salman deserves a four-year prison term for "insulting hatred" in the kingdom.
Since 2011, opposition groups have been banned and hundreds of dissidents have been arrested. Last year, the Royal Decree introduced a fundamental change giving military courts the mandate to prosecute civilians for terrorist offenses. In June, a law forbade "leaders and members of political associations dissolved for violation of the constitution or the laws of the kingdoms" to stand for election.
