Defense Minister Mario Kunasek discovered the spy couple suspected a few weeks ago after receiving information from another European intelligence service. The colonel should have been acquired in the 1990s and continue to work for the Russian intelligence services until 2018.

"Russian spying in Europe is unacceptable and will be condemned," Kurz said.

Austrian Minister of Defense Mario Kunasek said at the press conference that the information that should interest the spy agent include weapons systems and migration.

In response to this revelation, Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl convened the Russian Ambassador to Austria and also planned a visit to Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry will in turn call Austria's ambassador on Friday because of the country's accusations, writes the Reuters news agency.

The first hearings took place with the retired colonel, who was not appointed by the Austrian authorities.
