The seven party leaders had appointed MEP Martin Fayulu as a joint candidate in the December 23 presidential election. He would challenge the former Interior Minister, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, supported by the chairperson by sitting, Joseph Kabila.

Three other presidential candidates have been approved to stand for election.

Joseph Kabila's second and last term came to an end two years ago, but he has clung to power because of a loophole in the constitution. After months of tension, Kabila announced on August 8 that he will not resign from his post since 2001.
