In 2011, Heimir Hallgrímsson, who played a fairly modest role as a player, assumed the role of assistant federation of Lars Lagerbäck. They then became a coaching duo and, under their direction, Iceland went to the European Championships in France and was successful.

Lagerbäck left after EM, but Hallgrímsson continued and guided Iceland to their first World Cup. A World Cup that started with the small island nation that played against Argentina.

However, this was not enough for the progress of the group.

"It's gone well lately, KSI has chosen Swedish and it can still happen again," writes Fréttablaðið.

"Erik Hamrén is available and the Swedes in Iceland have been successful," writes 433.

Erik Hamrén was the Swedish federation between 2009 and 2016. He left Blågult after EM 2016 where Sweden left the group and currently working as manager of the South African club Mamelodi Sundowns
