Forest fires in Greece – 48 dead and many injured

At least 48 people have died in the worst forest fires in Greece in a decade.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed, highways were closed and residents were asked to take the plane.

Achillea Tzouvaras, fire director, said: "This is an extreme situation," writes the Guardian, after two forest fires collapsed on either side of the Greek capital, Athens.

No further details on the deaths were reported, but a witness should have seen at least four people along a road to Mati, just 3 miles east of the capital city.

According to Red Cross volunteers and local authorities, bodies were found near a popular beach in Mati, near a beach restaurant. People tried to swim near their homes but did not succeed

So the number is killed in at least 48 people, according to the Greek reporter newspaper.
