On Wednesday, the Riksdag voted in favor of replacing the radio and television fee with a mandatory public service tax. This is a reasonable change. However, it must be finalized in the public service.

Even though we have an expeditionary government, the work of Parliament continues. On Wednesday, the Riksdag votes for a new funding form for the utility companies SVT, SR and UR. If the Riksdag votes as planned, the current radio and television taxes will go to the grave and will be replaced by a mandatory public service fee.

This change is quite reasonable, although you can criticize the total amount of tax: 8.2 billion SEK, it is a lot of money. SVT, SR and UR should be able to handle a smaller pocket bag.

Due to technological developments, where more and more people watch television via a computer or mobile phone, they have less and less of a television receiver. This means that the current funding model, which is based on the actual ownership of television receivers, is untenable. Adding fees to owning computers, mobile phones and tablets is also not an easy way out. With a tax, the cost of collection and control, around 166 million kroner per year, is currently provided by Radiotjänst in Kiruna.

No, if we had a public service, it's better with a tax than the current funding model. However, it is high time to launch a major debate on the public service mission itself. What should the public service be? And what are not going to do SVT, SR and UR?

Thanks to the radio and television fees and the new public service tax, SVT, SR and UR occupy a privileged position in the Swedish media market. No other media is guaranteed funding, regardless of who likes its product.

With this privileged position, citizens can expect much more from utilities and people outside our politicians. These have the shared responsibility of public service undertakings to engage effectively in public service broadcasting, public service broadcasting.

The public service mission should not mean, like today, that SVT and SR send and produce everything for everyone. And, if something is sent in SVT or SR, that does not mean, by definition, public service: "Strunt, it's bad and snus, it's snus, even in the boxes of & # 039; "As Gustaf Fröding dictated.

First, utility companies must focus on issues of great societal or cultural importance. These include news agencies, local journalism, audit journalism, documentaries, science journalism, art broadcasting, and popular education programs.

Major sporting events, doctrines, dating programs and pure entertainment are not part of the public service mission – and are also excellent in the commercial media market. How is the public service Melodifestivalen? World Ski Championships? The Expedition Robinson flight program? Or SVT's commitment in a diet for fat dogs? The fact that something is popular does not make it public or public service.

A public service tax is reasonable. But we need fewer trams and more TVs and radios actually serving the public.
