Friday night, at the Swedish time, thousands of migrants from Honduras forced the border between Guatemala and Mexico. They rushed to the border bridge that connects the countries, but were stopped by the Mexican border police.
The migrants then hit camps on the bridge while it was raining a lot.
The news agency now says Mexico is opening the border to women and children in the so-called caravan of migrants.
– I'm lucky, happy! Finally! cried Gina Paola Montes, 21, when she was allowed to enter Mexico, according to the AFP news agency.
The Mexican authorities should have allowed dozens of women and children to cross the border. They are currently being taken to a refugee camp in the city of Tapachula, 40 kilometers from the border. An activist from Honduras said that the group of released women and children would be granted asylum and would be offered housing in the city of Tapachula, according to TT.
The caravan started its own hiking in Honduras last weekend and have crossed Guatemala. But on the border with Mexico, it stopped. US President Donald Trump does not want the caravan to reach the United States and has threatened to withdraw his aid to Honduras if the migrants come there.
Honduras and Guatemala say countries are trying to help Honduran migrants return to their country of origin and that country presidents Juan Orlando Hernández and Jimmy Morales will meet on Saturday in Guatemala.
Guatemalan President Morales later announced that about 2,000 Hondurans had returned to their country. Nearly 500 other migrants are on their way home, according to Reuters.
