"Mr. Battlefield": We take history seriously

"Battlefield" is back where it all began almost 20 years ago – on the battlefields of the Second World War. It means greater responsibility than ever, according to Lars Gustavsson of the Dice Game Company. For the experience of the players – but also for the history of the world and for the forgotten participants of the war.

Lars Gustavsson, creative director and nicknamed "Mister Battlefield", receives in the premises of Dice overhanging Stockholm. The battlefield "Battlefield V" is soon launched and the eyes of the game world are directed to Sweden and the Medborgarplatsen office.

"It's nervous and there's a lot of pressure, but at the same time getting a receipt if we've done well is a huge release we've been working on for so long," says Gustavsson.

Recently, he presented new "war stories" in one step for an international press force. In the various sections, the player plays the role of a handful of fighters – including a woman of resistance in the north of occupied Norway and a Senegalese soldier during the landing of the south of France. Gustavsson believes that the places and fates that occurred in the dark history books.

"It has colored Norway more than many Swedes have understood, Elsewhere you do not even talk about Norway when you talk about war, it's the same when we cover the colonial troops." They fought for a country that needed it, but they did not fully respect it, he said.

"We wanted to raise the most unknown stories, and it is clear that we could also represent the landing in Normandy, but then we would do it in our own way.

But it's not the solo campaigns that made the series so popular. Most are looking for "Battlefield" to fight other players via the network. Here, Dice listened to the wishes of the players – some features were added and something else was removed, to maximize the experience, according to Gustavsson.

"I usually say that" Battlefield "is a bit like a fine wine sauce that you cook until it becomes that perfect taste experience.

This means, among other things, that a "Royal Battle" mode, similar to "Fortnite", will be set up next year for survival on a map that is gradually shrinking.

Players also have new opportunities to build fortifications and other aids. In addition, the game has more destruction than ever before, where environments and buildings can explode, be broken or crushed by tanks. Players also have more opportunities to complete their fighting skills with new ways to move and use the surroundings, and the random factor of the balls has been lost.

"In the last game, our hardcore audience thought that we had lost our minds and that we had simplified things, but in" Battlefield V "you can not come in and control it directly," said Lars Gustavsson.

That the public can be a collector, he learned this spring that the first trailer of the game is out. The clip would show the options of the game, but would cause a lot of problems in the comments and forums.

Above all, it was deducted to introduce female soldiers into the fights that pitted gallophobia against some gamblers who accused the developer of taking a lot of liberty with the story. But the ambition to include more players and give them choices weighs more than realism – and women are here to stay in the "battlefield," according to Gustavsson.

"It was a conscious choice of us and a natural step forward.

"Mr. Battlefield" has been on the whole trip. In 1999, he sat down with a handful of colleagues and filmed a prototype of what would be "Battlefield 1942" – the kickoff of the entire series.

Since then, success and technological development have provided an opportunity to create a realistic war experience that they could only dream of at the time. But at the same time, the world has changed. Today, it is difficult to make a fun adventure of some of the most horrible events in history.

"We were then a fairly young and naive group, and discussions about the brutal reality of war did not exist in the same way," Lars Gustavsson explains.

Today, they have a little more thought, although it is mainly to create entertainment.

"Of course, we create games, but we make games on the story and it's important to take it seriously." When we played games about the First World War, we worked a lot on how to describe such a huge trauma. When we describe the Second World War, the responsibility is even greater, he says.

"Battlefield"

Is a series of war games from the point of view of the first person, centered on the war with other players on the net.

Published by the American giant EA and developed by Swedish Dice.

The first game of the series, "Battlefield 1942", released in 2002, is a resounding success. Part of the recipe for success was to allow players to use a variety of vehicles, such as airplanes, tanks and ships.

Since then, the war has collapsed in the future, during the Vietnam War and more recently during the First World War in "Battlefield 1" from 2016.

Northern Norway, North Africa, Rotterdam and France are hitherto clear battlefields. This time, the creators scrapped the excluded premium cards. This means that players will have access to new battlefields and other materials in the future without paying extra.

"Battlefield V" will be released on November 20th for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
