The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, confirms that the country's former president, Nelson Mandela, has passed away.

Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa and an icon in the fight against the apartheid system in the country. He died in his home in Johannesburg on December 5, 2013.

– He is resting now. He got peace, said Jacob Zuma in his speech to South Africans after the fall of Mandela.

In recent months, Mandela has been treated for pneumonia. He will receive a complete state of the funeral and a flag of sadness has been announced in the country.

– South Africans. Nelson Mandela has brought us together, and it is together that we take leave of him, Zuma said in the same speech.

US President Barack Obama said the world has lost one of the most influential and courageous people. British Prime Minister David Cameron said that a great light has died out because of Mandela's death. Although Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, he never gave up the fight for Whites and Darkness who lived peacefully side by side in South Africa. He was released in 1990 and was elected President of South Africa in 1994.

Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and received over 250 other awards for his work on diplomatic questions and for peace.

After his retirement from the 1999 presidential post, he joined a number of human rights organizations. He retired from the public in 2004.

Mandela is buried on December 15th. He receives a state funeral in Qunu's hometown. Next Tuesday, a major national memorial service will be held at the Johannesburg Football Stadium.
