The 59-year-old journalist Jamal Khashoggi lived in exile in the United States, where he wrote articles in The Washington Post. He was a critical colleague of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, and fled the country in September 2017, after the Prince's appointment for the throne wing.
Jamal Khashoggi criticized Saudi Arabia's involvement in the war in Yemen and also described the culture of fear that he believed in Saudi Arabia after the killing of rights activists of man and dissidents.
Khashoggi went to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, on October 2, to obtain the documents required to get married. He never came out of the building.
Initially, Saudi Arabia claimed that Khashoggi had left the consulate after completing his trial. But 17 days after the disappearance, the regime admitted that Khashoggi was killed during his visit. The explanation provided was that he had died as a result of trauma. On October 25, the regime changed and stated that the murder had been planned by those who had executed it.
