On March 17, 2018, the Breath Blower reveals Christopher Wylie for The Observer and The New York Times on how he helped Cambridge Analytica to collect information from 50 million people. Facebook users in the United States. The figure will later be changed to 87 million. The user information must have been sold to the election campaign of President Donald Trumps and declared to be a contributory reason for his election.
The investigative reporter The Guardians Carol Cadwalladr asked for details about the work during an interview with Ekot utrikeschef Ginna Lindberg in a crowded beach of Wisby during the fourth day of Almedal week.
She describes this as chaos when Cambridge Analytica was to be published and a huge relief when everything was ready
– The Guardian already wrote in 2015 facts then. But it is the whistleblower who made the last piece of the puzzle. In his first phone call with him, I could hardly believe what he was saying, she said.
There were three international news organizations working with Cambridge Analytica: The Guardian / The Observer, The New York Times, and Channel 4 News. A fair challenge, she said.
– Me and the team were completely exhausted. It was months of work to bring everything together. Facebook tried to stop us. The week before publication, we put an autoresponder on everything – we told Facebook that's what we have, we'll say it and here are our questions. On Friday, the day before the publication, I woke up with an email saying that Facebook was threatening. Facebook is huge, of course, I walked into the office and talked to our lawyers.
Facebook then issued a press release, trying to have control of the story first. Carole Cadwalladr then refused to talk about the leak for two years
Subsequently, the New York Times pushed to publish what made everyone honeymooners.
– It was three o'clock in the evening. new done. In the morning it was outside. It was an incredible feeling – finally
Ginna Lindberg: How did you find Christopher Wylie?
– I wrote the first thing at Cambridge Analytica in February 2017. Then I discovered a link to a company in Canada that had worked for one of the Brexit campaigns. But when I asked they removed the link. I started looking for former employees at Linkedin. One of the first ones I met said that I had to find Chris Wylie. There was nothing about him online and nothing that linked him to Cambridge Analytica. But I got a number and I was wrong.
Carole Cadwalladr tells me that the first phone call lasted eight hours
– I could not believe everything he said. He was scared. It was shortly after Donald Trump had been chosen and Chris had played a role in that. Chris had helped record data from several Facebook profiles. And Steve Bannon ( reds . note . The former strategy of Donald Trump) was just a man that he met . Bannon had these data and it was at the Pentagon.
She questioned the pros and cons of introducing Christopher Wylie to the world stage.
– Chris finally decided to come, but of course he hesitated. What took me so long was just trying to put it at ease. He had to be ready to be challenged with questions, but also willing to reveal the big players. This has given me constant air for all other evidence, to take legal advice but also to protect.
Christopher Wylie initially refused to be registered.
– I only took notes. He did not want to be registered until everything was in place. This happened a week before the disclosure. I had to sit around the clock during the last days to complete the last articles.
Ginna Lindberg: Have you thought about the risks?
– Yes. Many people were interested in what we had. It seemed fragile and the chances were against us.
Carole Cadwalladr became even more aware of the vulnerability of the digital age
– We do not know who the information is about us simply. We were nonchalant towards that. Everyone is running campaigns, but I realized right away that it was not ok. It was not a trading company, it was a game that was spending millions for data collection. They use this technology for the common population and it is extremely problematic.
She thinks huge tech platforms are illegal
– We do not know how their algorithms work and that's what drives me to keep going. Facebook has the answers to their servers. We have a situation where companies are dangerous for the state. Facebook is an American society, so when the British Parliament wants Mark Zuckerberg give us the answers he refuses. That's why we co-published with The New York Times because they have a bigger impact on Facebook.
Carole Cadwalladr believes that Facebook and Google will play an important role for the Swedish elections in September.
– A large part of your choice will be transmitted through the platforms. You do not know who pays for these ads. As part of the abortion survey in Ireland, we saw in real time how foreign groups were using foreign money to influence.
Ginna Lindberg Comes to Sweden?
– Yes. Everyone is vulnerable. You will be influenced by the "black box" and it is very difficult to sell. For example, in recent weeks, we have received evidence of the relationship between pro-Brexit and Russia.
