More than 80 people, most of them students, were kidnapped in the city of Bamenda, in western Cameroon, state sources within the government and army.

"A total of 81 people were kidnapped, including the main one," said a military source, who also said that they had been kidnapped on the ground.

A government source said 82 people had been abducted from a secondary school. They are 79 students, the director, a teacher and a driver.

No group has taken responsibility for kidnapping in the English-speaking region, where a separatist revolt is ongoing against the central government of President Paul Biya.

According to separatists, the francophone education system discriminates against anglophone students. The uprising took hold last year since the government suspended peaceful protests. Many people escaped the unrest in Bamenda and the surrounding area.

Separators had previously attacked schools and killed at least one principal and truncated a teacher.
