Part of Syria's National Museum in Damascus has reopened after being closed for almost seven years.

The authorities hope that the whole museum will be able to reopen soon.

The National Museum, with its rich collections of archaeological finds and artifacts, was closed at the start of the civil war in 2012 when battles erupted near Damascus.

This year, Syrian government forces with the help of Russia have driven out rebel forces and jihadists from the region, and the museum is no longer in a danger zone.

The civil war has seriously damaged Syria's cultural heritage. All parties have accused each other of the destruction of ancient monuments and the burglary of museums.
