The lawyer of Asia Bibi has already left Pakistan after being threatened. Ashiq Masih, married to Asia Bibi, is currently seeking asylum in Britain, the United States or Canada, reports the British BBC. Masih says he is concerned for the safety of his family after the many protests in Pakistan against the verdict.
Asia Bibi was accused of having concealed the Prophet Muhammad and was sentenced to death. But last week, the country's Supreme Court ruled that she should be released after being jailed for ten years. However, almost immediately after the verdict, a new shock message arrived to Asia Bibi and all those who supported her case: she must not leave the country. The verdict will also be reviewed and Asia Bibi is still in prison.
A death sentence
Human rights organizations in Pakistan say the government, in principle, banned leaving the country and signed the death sentence of Asia Bibi. Immediately after the announcement of the detention sentence, violent demonstrations broke out.
On Wednesday, fundamentalist groups blocked traffic in several places. But Friday night, the shares were canceled after the conclusion of an agreement between the fundamentalist groups and the government. This agreement includes the review of the fall of Asia Bibi and the release of a number of detainees who protested the verdict.
In an interview with German Deutsche Welle (DW), Ashiq Masih said that Friday's deal gave him "jolts".
"My family is scared, my family is scared and so are my friends, and this deal would never have happened.
The clergyman is reunited
He added that he and his daughters ardently wanted to finally meet Asia Bibi. But now, it is feared that she is not allowed to leave the prison.
"The judges were very brave, they were really sentenced for proof, but before reviewing the judgment, the clergy may gather in court to try to influence the judges," said Ashiq Masih.
He has no doubt that he will be able to seize the courts before further negotiations.
"The situation is very dangerous for us right now, we are not under protection and we are hiding, we are changing places all the time, but I think that God has protected us and will continue to protect us, I trust God.
