Protests against President Daniel Ortega took off in mid-April

Initially, the discontent sparked by a new pension reform launched by the government in response to a rapidly growing deficit of the country's pension system. The first days were killed at least ten people.

The president quickly reversed the reform – which had resulted in higher pension payments and fewer payments – and offered discussions to calm the mood. But he was already too late.

The difficult response of the police and the security forces, who, according to several testimonies, protested strongly against the demonstrators, caused the protests to grow. More than 220 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured since April

The opposition accuses Daniel Ortega of nepotism and trying to introduce a dictatorship characterized by brutal repression.

The Catholic Church wants the election scheduled for 2021 to be postponed to March next year as a way to resolve the crisis.
