A bit on the stretch of stage sixteen they suddenly appeared: the tractors. A group of local farmers had decided to sabotage the race of the Tour de France, drawing attention to a rally.

They had pushed hay bales on the track and the police had to intervene with a pepper spray. Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan received a spray in his eyes and his eyelids swelled. Even the leader of the Tour, Geraint Thomas, seemed to be suffering.

Stop of the Tour de France

The cyclists had to make a temporary stop while the police passed to the demonstrators. The comment of Eurosport Roberto Vacchi led a sharp criticism of the action.

– It's sad. It does not help them in their case, says Vacchi.

– Everyone has the right to an opinion and to fight for his cause. But that did not seem right to me.

"Aggressive Farmers"

– It seems that Protesters have tried To stop the race, we were told that the guys would drive, and then we saw some really aggressive farmers. I do not know what they protested. We were told by the police that the pepper spray used by the police had flowed in the face of cyclists. I do not know how many, but many guys have suffered, but nothing serious, thankfully, says Matt White, Mitchelton-Scott's Stable Manager at ITV.
