Total destruction of forest fires in Mati, Greece

A woman's shoe, a key and a piece remain in the ashes. Charred black trees on the courtyard lean over the small area where 26 men, women and children die Monday night.

He ignored these floating families, surrounded them and burned them and took all the oxygen – only thirty yards from the depths to the sea. The bodies were found to have collapsed collapsingly, desperately seeking safety in the latest.

Aspa Iliopoulos is puzzled at the entrance to the house. She is next door, and one of the many people who lost her property in this great fire – but she kept the spirit of life the most important.

– Everything happened so fast. Just before sundown yesterday, we saw smoke rising from the mountains above the road. It is far enough, so we did not at first think that there was a danger. But only ten and fifteen minutes later, he started smoking everywhere – and suddenly, the flow continued.

In the streets there was chaos. Sparks and flames flew between cars whose drivers were desperately trying to maneuver through the narrow streets. Aspa Iliopoulos and her husband managed to get to a nearby place – just before the road was swallowed by fire.

Tonight's strong winds caused unusually fast fire spread. The background: many months of drought and a summer when temperatures have often risen to more than 40 degrees – which has brought some meteorologists in the country to look like dry Greece in a matchbox.

– But the authorities were also very slow. Relief efforts did not start seriously until midnight, Aspa Iliopoulos criticizes and shakes his head.

The inhabitants of Mati and other affected areas were ordered to leave the burned areas where hundreds of houses were destroyed. Many have also managed to descend to the water, and seek shelter in the waves – your fire could not reach.

Konstantina Papadopoulou was one of those who fled to the sea to escape the flames. The fire devoured everything on the beach – but it escaped.

Now she's back to Mati with her 31-year-old daughter Anna to inspect the devastation in their homes. Then suddenly she does not feel anymore. She fainted by the disruption of emotions.

A moment later, DN is when she enters the back of a Skoda. His lined feet protrude at the back of the car. The breathing is heavy. Anna strokes her head and speaks calmly.

– The ambulance is en route. Stay calm mom

But not everyone can escape. Many are still looking for relatives, and there is concern that the mortality rate will rise.

On one of the small streets we meet Adjela, who lives in a neighboring municipality. She came here to see about her uncle's house, and – especially – to look for two missing friends.

– They were here Monday night. And they did not hear about it. I do not want to think about what happened to them, not in the light of everything I see and hear here, she says.

The quick-fire process also miraculously rendered some homes. The balcony and the living room of Fraginea's family house are completely burned, but the rest of the house is intact, and all indications are that the building can be saved.

– We were lucky, but it's still very sad. Many have lost their lives and you see what it looks like. "It will take a long time to recover," said Roula Fragineas, 47, while his brother Andreas goes to bed

Of course, the weather is not favorable, that's right. But they had sent almost every firefighter to the west of Athens, so there was hardly anyone who could withstand the blaze. This is bad planning, it must be possible to demand more, he says.

Hundreds of volunteers arrived Tuesday to help with the supplies. At sunset, they shared the water and tried to pair the lost pets with the owners via Facebook pages and other means. Everyone did what he could. And they did it among broken glass, melting metal to extravagant shapes, and in front of a night where every spark and little smoker would resurrect fear.

Only a few meters from the beach were found 26 bodies when the fire was extinguished. A few hours later, a molten cell phone, a burned woman's shoe and a key ring remained.
