The coronavirus has struck the Swedish royal family.
Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia, started having flu-like symptoms on Wednesday and then tested positive for the virus, the royal palace confirmed in a statement Thursday.
“The prince and princess have milder flu symptoms, but feel fine under the circumstances. Immediately after the illness, the prince and princess were quarantined at home with their children, ”the statement read.
The family live in Stockholm, The Guardian reported.
The King and Queen of Sweden, along with Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, will all undergo testing on Thursday as a precaution, the palace said.
The royal family were together at the funeral of the Queen’s brother last week, but everyone apparently tested negative for the virus before the event, the newspaper reported, citing local tabloid Aftonbladet.
Compared to its northern neighbors, Sweden opted for the herd immunity approach at the start of the pandemic and chose not to resort to strict lockdowns, which created one of the highest death rates of the region.
As of Thursday, Sweden had recorded a total of 236,355 COVID-19 cases and 6,622 deaths, according to data from John Hopkins.
Earlier this month, hospitalizations soared 60% in the country after being criticized by a second wave of the virus.
