This season did not go as planned. Penn State sat 0-5 with major issues on both offense and defense. But you know what? It doesn’t matter right now, as Penn State – well – is victorious, beating Michigan at the Big House 27-17.
I wouldn’t dare say it’s all easy for the Nittany Lions in 2020, but for the most part it wasn’t the toughest win in the world. Penn State climbed 7-0 after his first practice, which featured a heavy dose of first-year running back Keyvone Lee – 10 games, seven of which were runs for Lee. That would be a running theme for Penn State today, as Lee had a breakout performance, carrying the ball 22 times for 134 yards and one touchdown.
Sean Clifford’s stats were modest: 17 of 28 for 163 yards. His longest pass was 22 yards to Parker Washington – who also had another great game, registering 9 receptions for 93 yards. But for Clifford, the most important thing was that he didn’t to lose the game. No interception. No clumsiness. If you’re Penn State in 2020, that’s really all you ask for.
Defensively, Penn State made the saves when they needed them. Of course, they were helped by Michigan’s utter inability to pitch football – Cade McNamara and Joe Milton combined for 13 of 28 for just 112 yards – but for a defense that has struggled in just about every game. of the season, it was a welcome sight to see the defense come up with a big 4th and thumbs up that basically sealed the game for the Nittany Lions.
2020 stinks. Even with that win, Penn State still sits at 1-5 – needless to say, but that type of record will never be acceptable in Happy Valley. But ladies and gentlemen, it feels good to be back in the winning column. Now it will be a question of ending the year strong: Rutgers and Michigan State are still ahead, two very winnable games for a program that can get back in the right direction.
