In the United States, cancer experts and radiologists are warning recipients of the Covid-19 vaccine that an otherwise normal immune response can be mistaken for cancer if it shows up on a mammogram or other cancer screening.
Before major attacks against infections and unwanted intruders, some of the body’s defense forces, the white blood cells, congregate in the lymph nodes. However, lymph nodes, especially in the armpit, can swell after Covid-19 vaccinations.
As cancer screens continue alongside vaccination campaigns around the world, a scan taken soon after vaccination can give a false positive and cause unnecessary stress during an already difficult time.
“This should not prevent patients from getting vaccinated”, says Dr. Melissa Chen, radiologist at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Chen and his colleagues at MD Anderson, Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and Dana-Farber in Boston have formed a panel to sound the alarm on the potential for false positives when the vaccine is deployed.
The committee warned medical experts to prepare for “Large volumes” chest computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) and mammograms showing swollen lymph nodes as vaccination campaigns continue.
The most commonly affected lymph nodes are located near the armpit and collarbone on the side where patients receive their vaccine.
The extent to which this swelling occurs is not fully understood and has been reported in studies of recipients of Pfizer / BioNtech and Moderna vaccines, but not of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
The resounding advice is for patients to tell their radiologist they’ve been vaccinated before a scan so that any lymph node swelling doesn’t necessarily lead to a misdiagnosis or trigger unnecessary, expensive and potentially invasive procedures.
