In northeastern Congo, at least 12 people have succumbed to an unknown disease since the beginning of the month, whose symptoms are similar to those of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. The plague occurred near the town of Mangina, about thirty kilometers to the west of the city of Beni, as stated today by the chief official Donat Kibwana. . The symptoms observed included fever, diarrhea, vomiting and nosebleeds.

Blood samples were sent to a regional laboratory for investigation, Kibwana said. The provincial health ministry in North Kivu said a team of local and international specialists were going to Mangina.

Last week, Congo and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the official end of the latest Ebola outbreak. The eruption was located in the Equator province, near the town of Mbandaka, about 1500 kilometers west of Beni. The Ebola virus is one of the most dangerous pathogens in the world. During a devastating epidemic in 2014 and 2015, more than 11,000 people died in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
