Oder ist Ehrfurcht das falsche Wort? Denn anders als vor den früher unnahbaren, manchmal auch etwas manischen Borgs, Sampras, McEnroes und Connors «fürchtet» sich niemand vor Federer. Viel mehr wird dieser bewundert und idealisiert – mit seiner Art neben dem Platz beinahe noch stärker als mit seinen Künsten am Ball.
Federer wünscht sich, es wäre länger so geblieben
King Roger ist ein König zum Anfassen, der seine Zeiten als Bettler nie vergessen hat. Aufgewachsen in mittelständischen Verhältnissen ging es ihm finanziell zwar recht gut. Bodenständigkeit und Bescheidenheit wurden ihm aber durch die Erziehung seiner Eltern mitgegeben. Und das angeborene Talent wie auch seinen Ehrgeiz zum Erfolg zu bündeln, bedeutete jahrelange Knochenarbeit und grosse Opferbereitschaft in der Jugend.
Als sich der 17-jährige «Rodschi» nach seiner Lehrzeit in Ecublens und Biel vor zwanzig Jahren die ersten Gehversuche an internationalen Turnieren verdiente, hatte er schon viel gelernt. In erster Linie, wie man vom Bengel, der wegen Wutanfällen etliche Male vom Training ausgeschlossen wurde und nach Niederlagen oft losheulte, zum Engel wird.
Der Schweizer Meister des Jahres 1997 wurde ein Jahr später Wimbledon-Juniorensieger. Vor 20 Jahren. Mithilfe eines Sport-Psychologen bereitete er sich auf die grosse Bühne vor, auf der er weitere drei, vier Jahre – mindestens bis zum ersten ATP-Sieg 2001 in Mailand – nur als Nebendarsteller spielte.
Der in gut einem Monat 37 Jahre werdende Evergreen erinnert sich: «Es ist ein Kampf, alles ist neu! Du musst kämpfen wegen der Trainingsbälle, wegen der Trainingsplätze, musst erst einmal wissen, wo es zum Court geht, wie weit weg das Hotel gelegen ist und ob du einen Transportdienst dorthin brauchst oder überhaupt bekommst. Viele Informationen auf einen Schlag – dabei sollst du dich ja irgendwann aufs nächste Match konzentrieren.»
Roger spricht in der Gegenwart, als durchlebe er alles noch einmal. Etwas melancholisch fügt er an: «Ja, das waren andere Zeiten. Sehr coole Zeiten. Ich habe sie sehr genossen und hätte mir gewünscht, sie dauerten länger an. Diese ganze Unbeschwertheit, das Neue!» Dass er die Gegner eigentlich nur aus dem Fernseher gekannt, allenfalls mal live spielen gesehen habe, sei nicht immer ein Nachteil gewesen. «Es war auch für meine Gegner schwierig – denn als ich jung war, hatte ich nur wenig zu verlieren.»
Irgendwann sei man dann halt ein Teil des Spiels. «Und vier Jahre später, wenn nichts mehr so neu ist und du alle kennst, musst du dich wieder neu orientieren.» Er spricht von der Zeit, als er Pete Sampras in Wimbledon schlug und die ganze Welt auf ihn aufmerksam machte. «Das ist mir ein bisschen zum Verhängnis geworden», sagt Federer selbstkritisch, «ich dachte, jetzt spiele ich immer und überall so wie gegen Sampras. Aber dann merkst du, jeder Tag ist ein neuer Kampf, man kann sich nie auf den Lorbeeren ausruhen. Cincinnati hat nichts mit Wimbledon zu tun, Rasen-Tennis nichts mit Indoor-Tennis und das wiederum nichts mit Sand.»
Für Federer ist es heute mehr Kampf als damals
Die Ansprüche stiegen, erstmals verspürte Roger Druck. Von «Grand-Slam-Blockade» und «ewigem Talent» war bald die Rede. Wie der 21-jährige Alexander Zverev heute brauchte auch Federer damals seine Zeit, damit umzugehen. Weil er das Problem bestens kennt, hilft er dem Deutschen heute, indem er ihm Tipps gibt und zur Geduld aufruft.

An Druck hat sich der 20-fache Grand-Slam-Sieger längst gewöhnt. Über zwei Jahrzehnte lang gehört er zu den meist Gejagten der Tour, zu den gefragtesten Interviewpartnern und Werbeträgern im Sport. Seit 2003, als er sich mit dem Major-Durchbruch in Wimbledon seinen Jugendtraum erfüllte, hat er in fast jedem Match viel zu verlieren. Den Weltranglisten-Thron musste die älteste Weltnummer 1 der Geschichte diese Woche – vielleicht nur vorübergehend – abgeben.
Ab M, 14 Uhr (SRF 2/info live), geht es mit dem Spiel gegen den Serben Dusan Lajovic für den achtfachen Wimbledon-Champion um die Titelverteidigung, in den nächsten 14 Tagen um einen weiteren historischen Eintrag. Federer bereut nichts, ist dankbar für sein Leben als Tennisprofi und Familienvater. Aber etwas Wehmut schwingt in seiner Stimme doch mit: «Heute ist es ein ganz anderer Kampf.»
