Nearly 45 years after the murder of the famous Chilean singer Víctor Jara, nine former soldiers were sentenced. They must be detained for five to fifteen years, as decided a judge Tuesday (local time). Jara was tortured and killed by soldiers on September 16, 1973. He was 41 years old.
Five days earlier, the army led by leader Augusto Pinochet ousted socialist president Salvador Allende. Jara, a singer, composer and theater director, was arrested and taken to a sports stadium, then Estadio Chile. There, he was killed with 44 shots. After the fall of Pinochet, the stadium was named after Jara.
Jara was a member of the Communist Party and a supporter of the Allende government. His body was exhumed in June 2009 to investigate the exact circumstances of his death. Six months later, the artist, born in 1932, was buried in Santiago de Chile in the presence of President Michelle Bachelet
Two years ago, a Florida court convicted a former officer of the murder of Jaras in a civil case. He was sentenced to $ 28 million in compensation for the musician's family.
