WhatsApp bug pushes gigabytes of backups over a cellular connection

Users of the popular WhatsApp-Messengers should currently keep an eye on the use of application data. Because a bug in the backup function has caused some users to suddenly transfer huge amounts of data to the cloud – and also, thankfully, at a time when only the mobile network was available.

At WhatsApp, the user can choose whether and how the respective cats should be registered. Normally, this is not a problem to run backups on cellular connections. Since only the most recent changes to the already downloaded package are added and you can skip large content such as videos before, that does not really get you anywhere.

There are currently a number of user reports whose backup function has been released. So, a colleague from Smartdroid reports that WhatsApp suddenly wanted to push a whole gigabyte into the cloud. Before the end, however, there was a problem with the network connection and it started with a data packet more than twice as big from scratch.

Similar reports are also available from miscellaneous others users. Again, the messenger wanted to quickly secure the current state in the cloud and packaged to download packets in the range of gigabytes. For one user, the application would have even had to try to move a total of 14 gigabytes over the mobile connection to the cloud.

way is the monthly volume

Of course, this can quickly lead users to be online for the rest of the month only with a severely restricted mobile connection – because in Germany, most users only have a few gigabytes of data. And when WhatsApp starts downloading the volumes in question via LTE, it will be very reasonable to wait for the total available volume to be used.

Currently, we still do not know where the problem comes from. It was believed in part that only users of a beta version are affected anyway – but that does not seem to be the case. After all, there are several reports in which users do not talk about using a beta – which would otherwise be very likely. And of course, you must have previously enabled cloud backup in the chat settings. If this is the case, it would be best to go without a data backup and disable the option temporarily until a clarification of the facts.
