The program of this year's Locarno Festival was presented on Wednesday. It is the last under the direction of Carlo Chatrian. Before going to Berlin, he again challenged his audience on Lake Maggiore

If it's not a goodbye with a bang. Marco Solari, president of the Locarno Festival, flatters the outgoing art director Carlo Chatrian with many words of praise. The 71st edition of the film festival on Lake Maggiore from 1 to 11 August is known to be the last one under the direction of Chatrian, before leaving for Berlin and will direct the film festival from 2020. Before that, it will show still in Locarno what he is infamous

Facility in Piazza Grande

On Wednesday, this year's program was presented by Locarno, in the magnificent Erlacherhof, at the headquarters of the Bernese president. And this one, Alec von Graffenried, was not interested in participating in the event, just as Ivo Kummer, head of the film section of the Federal Office of Culture. While he was rejecting the speech offer saying that he was a picture man, not words, he burst forth as always before Carlo Chatrian's exuberantly cinematic enthusiasm for cinema. .

He promises lightness in the outdoor program of Piazza Grande: a lot of comedies, an animated film, a detective story – not "festival films," as Chatrian understands them. Two works from this year's Cannes program are included, and it is also explicitly mentioned that many films have female protagonists. Locarno, however, should not fall into the same trap as Cannes and dictate quota programming. The future artistic direction was to give the festival an independent and safe signature from the beginning – at the time of more and more festivals this is more important than ever.

This Chatrian had not done that in the six years of his aegis. The program was always very personal and stimulating. As every year, sweets like Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" are on sale on the Piazza Grande – and black bread competing. As he wanted to let off steam before being tamed in Berlin, Chatrian surpasses once again in terms of radical selection.

A new record of length

That the real moviegoers of Locarno need a seat is nothing new. But now, it is better to take an air mattress with you to be able to take an exhausted nap during the 14 (!) Hours that the Argentinian post "La Flor" lasts. It's a new length record in a festival story that's not just poor on extra-long works. Aside from this "tribute to the history of cinema", Chatrian will again be sad, melancholy and loaded with problems in competition. Not surprising. We do not want to interpret the title of the final movie: it's "I Feel Good" (who and why that is).

Now, enjoy Berlin! You get a pure blood cinerea. Compared to the NZZ, Chatrian expresses its anticipation of the new challenge – which consists, last but not least, in learning German first. He said that he was "very happy" for Chatrian and that he would have borne a few more years with him, says Solari to some extent significant, but the joy will now be entirely on the side of the German capital . Who will follow in Locarno on Chatrian, will only be known at the end of the month of August. Thirty high-level candidates are currently studying, says Solari and quotes Fontane: "Always close, calm, quiet, draw the circles of life."

And then there is the organization: After last year and caused a lot of frustration, promises the energetic Raphael Brunschwig, operational director of the festival, this year, reservations are possible and everything will be better. It will be nice anyway, under the cloudless summer sky of Piazza Grande.
