A victory for history – for the first time an Italian wins the British Open

The Carnoustie Championship has once again shown why it has the reputation of being the toughest of the nine squares that the British Open will host. The 147th edition of the oldest golf tournament in the world offered a thrill in the final round on Sunday, as it can only happen when even the best team in the world has to fight regularly for each par. And as an added difficulty, the wind on the Scottish North Sea coast was also refreshed when the leaders started.

It's a classic Cinderella story that took place in Scotland: the 35-year-old Torino is the first Italian to win a big golf tournament. Molinari brings experience, in 2004 he becomes pro, on the European Tour he wins five tournaments, he plays twice for Europe at the Ryder Cup (2010 and 2012) – but he still remains a player second-line, who does not look like any one

However, the younger brother of Edoardo Molinari, who won the prestigious US Amateur Championship in 2005, has also not been the winner of Carnoustie for long. He entered the final round with Tiger Woods, and while all the attention was focused on the American, Molinari was able to position himself quietly. In a discreet way, he aligned Par to Par. It was almost monotonous to look at him, there was no show and hardly any uncertainty. But when he was lucky, he kept his nerves of iron and sat, similar to a sprinter in cycling, who can solve at the right time and distance the competition by two nose lengths.

A birdie at the 14th hole and one at the last hole was enough to win with the marker of eight under par, two punches in front of a quartet composed of English Justin Rose , Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and Americans Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele, all of whom escaped Carnoustie without problems

Molinari's nonspecific strategy proved correct, he did not have a problem. He was not the only one to have chosen this tactic, but he was the only one could pass perfectly until the end. His partner Woods has also made positive headlines. After the fourth spine surgery, his health seems to be so stabilized that he can once again play at the top of the world. But the 24-year-old Texan was struggling with problems almost constantly, forgetting chances in the playoffs or getting into trouble regularly. It was amazing, Spieth had still dominated the course on Saturday and really impressed with a round of 65 (6 under par.)

Langer, timeless

With Molinari as winner and Rose and McIlroy in two Europeans soften the usual American domination for once. And almost off the beaten track, Bernhard Langer has once again proved how exceptional he is. The German is soon 61 years old, but he still looks to be 15 or 20 years younger. Langer made the cut and was by far the oldest player on the field in the last two rounds, which he finished as a shared 24th with a lower than normal shot.
