Scientists have been working on breeding meat in the lab for years. The Coop Bell subsidiary also invests: The company has invested 2 million francs in the Dutch start-up Mosa Meat, which grows beef.
But is artificial meat the solution to the problems of the global meat industry? Blick answers the most important questions.
How do you taste cultured meat?
According to the researchers, just as we know meat. On a molecular basis, laboratory and livestock meat are one and the same. It means: there is no difference in taste.
What is the pleasure ?
The lab's first burger cost 250,000 euros. It was in 2013. Currently, Mosa Meat estimates the price of a piece of minced meat at nine euros. Thus, the grown hamburger is currently much more expensive than its store counterpart.

Mosa Meat wants to bring ground beef to market in three to four years. In the United States, it may be available sooner: the US food manufacturer Hampton Creek wants to sell artificial meat by the end of 2018.
Is the meat of the lab worth it?
Certainly – there are scientists and animal rights advocates. According to the animal welfare organization "Peta", cultivated meat production consumes 99% less space and 90% less water – a huge opportunity for the climate. And also for billions of animals that no longer live in mass breeding and who have to die.
So, that is the solution to all the problems of the meat industry
. There are still construction sites. For example, Mosa Meat is always looking for a nutrient solution suitable for cells. In addition, these companies must dramatically increase their production. Otherwise, the lab meat will not be competitive.
