reThe Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has ordered the mandatory recall of nearly 100,000 Opel diesel vehicles worldwide. Insignia, Cascada and Zafira are models from the 2013 to 2016 construction years, the KBA announced on Friday. There are around 96,000 cars worldwide, of which around 32,000 are in Germany.
On the types of vehicles affected, the KBA "detected illegal defeat devices," he said. These facilities could lead to increased emissions of nitrogen oxides when driving vehicles.
According to the agency, about 23,000 vehicles have already been converted "on a voluntary basis". Opel must now extend the improvement measures "immediately to all concerned vehicles to remove the illegal checking devices of the vehicles concerned".
The recall was expected after the response from the federal Department of Transportation on Monday. Earlier, prosecutors and the police had been looking for alleged fraud in Opel models at two of the automaker's sites. This occurred after a criminal complaint filed by the KBA.
