Samsung announced today that the first Onyx Cinema LED system will be operational at the Traumpalast cinema in Esslingen near Stuttgart. First of all, only the guests and the specialized press will be able to benefit from it: tomorrow, July 5th, the movie buffs will be able to discover the new technology.

Resolution 4K
The technology used is interesting. 26 million light-emitting diodes operate on the Cinema LED, which makes up nearly 9 million pixels and shines alone. "This equates to a 4K resolution of 4.096 x 2.160 pixels in an area of 10.3 by 5.4 meters," says Samsung. LED technology replaces the conventional screen and previously used digital projectors.

High light intensity, 100% color accuracy
Moviegoers should notice it clearly, especially with up to ten times more brightness. An advantage of LEDs is the high light intensity of up to 146 fL (Lambert foot) or 500 nit. Color reproduction is also new: black is rendered in true black, "True Black", without reflections. The same applies to the white, which can be displayed completely pure – as the final product is such an image on the monitor, which should guarantee regardless of the brightness in the cinema, color accuracy and reproduction colors at 100 percent. This gives the movie image more detail than possible before.
For movie theaters, Samsung's new LED technology has another advantage. As you no longer need a projection room, theaters can be bigger.
"The cinema, as we know it up to now, is based on the projection since 1895. Digitization followed the recovery of 2000, but since then the technology has remained largely constant," Martin said. Gross, Product Marketing Manager at Samsung Electronics GmbH, "The LED Cinema Screen has the potential to conquer the industry, creating a cinematic experience with compelling image quality for the audience and new insights for the operators."
