Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) increased from just under 12% to 355 million euros. The digital activity has developed particularly dynamically and contributed decisively to the semester. Thus, the commercial and financial information portal "Business Insider" reached the breakeven point in the first half of the year and therefore earlier than expected. "An important step shows that we can increasingly monetize journalistic content in the digital world," says Döpfner
. The number of digital subscriptions for the two leading journalistic brands Bild und WELT has also increased. Currently, the two information portals account for approximately 485,000 paying subscribers.
"Digital journalism has an economic perspective, it's an encouraging message for the whole industry," commented Mathias Döpfner on the development and announced the extension offers. "We will review the 2019 acquisition opportunities and continue to invest in quality journalism in the existing media." Concrete steps are neither planned nor predictable in the short term.
Asked about the print editions of Bild and WORLD Döpfner but rather stick the money in the expansion of digital offers. "We do not invest in the development of non-economic diffusion." The international involvement in Business Insider and the European version of Politico in Brussels has already tripled the reach of journalistic offers.
Palantir, an American data mining company, supports Axel Springer in the process of optimizing the Group's data structures and making better use of existing data. Döpfner pointed out that in the coming months, the Group will continue to be heavily involved in the debates on Auxiliary Copyright in the EU and the Regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communications. "Currently, important steps are being taken!"
For 2018, the Group reiterated its objectives at Group level, but slightly increased its forecasts for organic revenue growth at Classifieds Media.
