The Statistical Office of Eurostat said Thursday in Luxembourg. Economists had expected only an increase of 1.2%. In April, production decreased by 0.8 percent (initially 0.9 percent).
Compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, May output rose 2.4 percent. This phenomenon was expected in the same way.
The production of consumer durables has increased particularly strongly on a monthly basis. It rose 2.1% in May over the previous month. Output of high-visibility equipment increased by 0.7%
Among the Member States for which data are available, Lithuania (+ 11.6%) and Ireland (+ 3.2%) recorded the largest monthly increase in industrial production. The largest decreases were registered in Portugal (-2.0%). For comparison: In Germany, industrial production increased by 2.5%. In France – the second largest economy in the eurozone – it disappointed and fell by 0.2%.
